Millennials : a new generation of employees

Baby boomers and Generation Xers love to mock and view millennials as perpetual punch lines . There are endless articles on the topic of the shortcoming of the millennial generation ? as seen by the older ones . But , they are presenting a new and different approach to the workplace and traditional career paths , for better or for worse . Undeniably , employers must examine and adjust to the expectations and demands of this workforce . Baby boomers may try to hang on to their treasured work ethics , but as that generation of employees begins to retire , it is the millennials that will be filling those shoes .

The is now on organizations to understand the expectations of this growing majority , or they will face a crisis of unhappy workers who are not interested in staying in their jobs . Employee engagement and retention has surely become a major issue . Instead of the usual attack on those born between 1982 and 2000 , let's take a look at the new generation and consider what they need to be satisfied , valuable members of the global workforce .

Millennials a very specific life balance as they pursue their careers . They do not shy away from challenges and , because of their comfort and dexterity with technology , have the know - how to find creative solutions to complicated questions . Information gathering is not a problem for them . But as focused as their approach is on the virtual world , they insist on feeling connected with their community and civic responsibilities . What some see as being overly digitally connected and entitled has actually formed a group of people that think change is not only possible , but worth the effort . They are not afraid to pursue social change in the world scene or within their employment positions .

Millennials have been raised with the idea that being part of the team is more important than winning . This is evidenced in how they prefer positions within the work environment to be . They are better motivated to solve tough , new ? or better yet ? old problems when the team is engaged in the pursuit together . They prefer a flat management , where the are more like 'side by sides' . Corporate hierarchy is becoming an ancient obstruction ; exerting it hinders progress . This is not to say they are lazy or have no personal drive . Millennials have very high expectations of themselves , they simply crave from mentors or peers when they accomplish their goals . Who doesn't want to be told when they've done a good job ?

There is priceless value to the self - confident energy that this generation brings to the workforce . It may seem that millennials are overly focused on their life balance and quality , but isn't that a refreshing break from workaholics with broken families ? Baby boomers may feel that hard work and long hours are what contribute to the economy , and they are undeniably dedicated to their jobs . But global recession still happened on their watch , so why not try something new ?

Companies need to acknowledge the idealism and expertise of the millennial generation , tell them specifically when they are doing a great job , share the company vision with them , and let them innovate . Maybe allowing a group of young labor power to thrive in their personal lives , social efforts , and current technology will breathe some life back into our suffering economies .
