يقتصر استخدام أسماء الإشارة على المفرد المذكر.

يختلف شكل اسم الإشارة حسب القرب: هذا/هذه للقريب، ذلك/تلك للبعيد، وهؤلاء/أولئك للجمع.

اسم الإشارة يتماشى مع جنس الشيء المشار إليه: «هذا كتاب» مقابل «هذه صورة».

"هذا" و"هذه" يمكن استبدالهما بدون فرق في المعنى في أي جملة.

يمكن أن يأتي اسم الإشارة قبل الاسم المنعوت كما في «هذا الكتاب مفيد».

جميع أشكال أسماء الإشارة تشير إلى القريب فقط.
