Al contar la cantidad de partidos dentro de un sistema de partidos, solo se deben "contar" los partidos relevantes.

La relevancia de un partido radica en su fuerza electoral o cantidad de votos, solamente.

A Sartori le interesa incluir el criterio de la dimensión de la distancia ideológica para crear su clasificación de sistemas de partidos.

Para clasificar un sistema de partidos basta con conocer la cantidad de partidos existentes con registro y en competencia electoral.

Dos partidos, uno de izquierda y otro de derecha, pero preocupados por un mismo tema político, pueden integrar una coalición "viable" según Sartori

Conocer la cantidad total de partidos políticos existentes en un sistema político permite entender si se trata de un sistema democrático o uno no democrático.

Un partido que gana el 5% de los votos, pero tiene los votos decisivos en la cámara de diputados para aprobar una reforma importante para el gobierno, ¿se le puede considerar un partido relevante?
