The Alhambra ? s history begins in the 9th century , when a small was first built on the hill of Al - Sabika in Granada . In the 13th century , the Nasrid kings , the last Muslim in Spain , transformed it into a grand city .
Under rulers like Muhammad I , Yusuf I , and Muhammad V , the Alhambra became a royal city with beautiful , courtyards , towers , and gardens . They added famous spaces such as the Palace of Comares , the Court of the , and the Hall of the Ambassadors .
In 1492 , the Catholic , Ferdinand and Isabella , took Granada and made changes to the Alhambra , adding elements . Today , the Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Spain ? s most important .
