It's the morning rush hour , the time everyone is heading into the city . Thousands of people are going to work or school . On the way , they'll stop at Starbucks , they'll order a medium - sized coffee . How do we know ? Marketing experts have discovered that people naturally choose the middle option in life . Objects are in the middle of a display are easier to see , so we spend more time looking at them and end up liking them more . For example , retailers , are always looking for a way to increase sales , have discovered more people buy toothbrushes when they are on the middle shelf in a supermarket . The same principle applies to the cup sizes at Starbucks . Until the mid 1990s , Starbucks changed its menu , they offered three drink options : Short , Tall and Grande . Most people ordered Tall ( medium ) drinks . Then Starbucks stopped advertising the Short size and added the large Venti size . The Grande , had been the large size until then , became the new middle size , and the size , was most frequently chosen . It seems that people feel safest in the middle , even if it isn ? t always the best value .
