The biological approach to explains that some people are more to addictive behaviours due to genetic and neurological factors . One key example is the A1 variant of the gene , which is linked to having fewer D2 receptors in the brain . When someone with the A1 variant engages in activities that increase dopamine , such as using or alcohol , their limited number of receptors can make everyday rewards feel less . Substances that stimulate the dopamine reward pathway temporarily for this deficiency , producing intense pleasure . Over time , this can drug - seeking behaviour , as the brain comes to on the substance to activate the pathway and provide feelings of reward .
