By the 3rd century CE , the Roman Empire began to crack under its own weight . The decline was not a single event but a slow process driven by internal political instability , assassinations , and civil wars . Economically , the empire faced crushing inflation , heavy taxation to pay for the army , and a reliance on slave labor that stifled technological innovation . The population also declined due to plagues . Externally , Rome faced pressure from on its northern borders and the in the east . Rome's legacy remained : forms the basis of legal codes in Europe and Latin America ; Latin evolved into the ; the preserved much of Rome's culture .
