To verify the multiplication , break 97 x 4 into two parts :
( 90 x 4 ) and ( x 4 ) . Since the total is 388 , the missing number is 7 .

Next , check 72 x 7 by writing it as ( x 7 ) + ( 2 x 7 ) and set the sum to 504 . The value that fits is 70 .

Finally , decompose 46 x 9 into ( 40 x 6 ) and ( 6 x ) , with the total 414 . The missing factor is 9 .
