El ojo humano, a pesar de su increíble complejidad, tiene un límite en cuanto a la resolución de detalles que puede percibir.

Zacharias Janssen : Se le atribuye la invención del primer microscopio compuesto alrededor de 1590 en Holanda. Hans Martens: Padre de Janssen, probablemente colaboró en la construcción, pero no es reconocido como el inventor principal. Hans Lippershey: Conocido por patentar el telescopio, algunos historiadores lo mencionan como posible inventor del microscopio, pero no hay pruebas sólidas. Galileo Galilei: Usó lentes para observar objetos pequeños y perfeccionó instrumentos ópticos, pero no inventó el microscopio. Cornelius Drebbel: Inventor holandés que trabajó con óptica y microscopía, pero no se le atribuye la invención original.
