Homelessness is a phenomenon in New York City . Perhaps that explains why hundreds of people Leo Grand , a homeless man , as they passed by every morning on their way to work . Patrick McConologue , a young software , was one of them . Every morning for three years , Patrick the homeless man on the sidewalk as he walked by . Then one day , something occurred . Somehow , Patrick managed to feel enough for the man to the bystander effect . He decided to make the man an in an attempt to change his life . Patrick the man and gave him a choice : He would give him $100 to on anything he wanted or he would teach him how to code * . Leo chose the second . For months after , they would meet every morning at the city park to coding . After four weeks of , Leo was ready to start coding his first app . The story was widely in the media .
