Some cultures see conflict as a thing , while others see it as something to be avoided . In Canada , conflict is not usually desired , but people are to deal directly with it . In fact , face - to - face meetings are the best way to deal with problems . However , in many countries , conflict is seen as or demeaning .

In some countries , problems are worked out quietly . A written note might be the best way to deal with the conflict . They are not being open about emotions , the reasons behind a conflict or a misunderstanding , or about personal information .

When you are dealing with a conflict , remember that people may think about how to deal with the conflict . Questions that may seem natural to Canadians - What was the conflict about ? What was your role in the conflict ? - may seem to other people .

Conflict can be classified as constructive or destructive . Constructive conflict helps the group achieve its . conflict holds back this process . A manager , supervisor or team leader ? s job is to make all conflicts constructive .

While a lot of factors can cause conflicts at work , 4 common are :

Personal Differences : These often arise from different needs , , values , perceptions , and / or expectations .
Information Differences : Conflict can arise from the use of different sources of information or different of the same information .
Different Objectives : Individuals and groups can have different or objectives .
Environmental Factors : Competition for organizational or external resources can be a source of conflict .

Conflict is inevitable but there are still ways that we can avoid or it .

Respect everyone ? s ideas and needs .
Turn problems into possibilities .
Listen so people will talk and talk so people will listen
Focus on the problem not the person
Build " power with " not " power over " others
Express feelings without blaming others
Own your part of the conflict
Strategize to reach mutually agreeable solutions
Create options - suggest more than one way .
Solve the problem and build the relationship

Conflict is not to be avoided at all times but when managed intelligently , can result in stronger relationships and more creative ideas . The secret to managing conflict is to slow down ; that is , using your head rather than just reacting . When you do this , good things can happen and the negatives can be greatly reduced . Conflict in the workplace is inevitable , but the goal should be a healthy , creative conflict rather than a big fight .

The ultimate goal of conflict resolution is to provide win - win solutions , where both sides believe that they have benefited .
