A farming system is defined as a population of individual farm systems that have broadly similar resource bases , enterprise patterns , household livelihoods and constraints , and for which similar development strategies and interventions would be appropriate . Depending on the scale of the analysis , a farming system can encompass a few dozen or many millions of households .
The classification of the farming systems of regions has been based on the following criteria :
? available natural base , including water , land , grazing areas and forest ; climate , of which altitude is one important determinant ; landscape , including slope ; farm size , tenure and organization ; and
? dominant pattern of farm activities and household livelihoods , including field crops , livestock , trees , aquaculture , and gathering , processing and off - farm activities ; and taking into account the main technologies used , which determine the intensity of production and integration of crops , livestock and other activities .
Due to its enormous latitudinal , varied topography and rich biodiversity , Latin America and Caribbean has one of the most diverse and complex range of farming systems of any region in the world . The Temperate Mixed ( Pampas ) Farming System covers 100 million ha in Central and Eastern Argentina and Uruguay . This system was originally largely devoted to livestock but now contains nearly 20 million ha of cultivated , although there is only negligible irrigation . The impetus for growth has come from demand for such crops as wheat , soybean and sunflower as well as horticultural production for Buenos Aires and Montevideo . The agricultural population is now estimated at almost seven million , and further intensification of production is expected within the system . Poverty is generally low .
