En este tipo de colonias se imponía una política de directa y el objetivo era obtener materias y beneficios económicos para la potencia colonizadora .

Las colonias de recibían población procedente de la metrópoli que se establecía en el nuevo territorio . Estas colonias solían tener una cierta de gobierno , y en el caso del Imperio se las conocía como " " , como ocurrió en Canadá o .

Por último , los mantenían formalmente su propio gobierno y una administración local , pero en realidad la ejercía el poder . Se creaba un paralelo que controlaba las decisiones importantes , especialmente las relacionadas con la y la política .
