Las palabras graves (llanas) siempre llevan tilde.

Todas las palabras agudas llevan tilde independentemente de su terminación.

Las palabras esdrújulas, y también las sobresdrújulas, llevan tilde siempre.

Las palabras llanas (graves) llevan tilde cuando no terminan en n, s o vocal.

En palabras con hiato, nunca se coloca tilde si hay vocal cerrada.

En palabras con hiato, cada vocal pertenece a una sílaba distinta y la tilde se coloca si corresponde a la vocal tónica.
