يُعرف علم التفسير بأنه علم يُفهم به كتاب الله تعالى المُنزل على نبيه محمد ﷺ وبيان معانيه.

نشأ علم التفسير في العصر الأموي، حيث لم تظهر الحاجة إليه في عهد النبي ﷺ.

لُقب الصحابي عبد الله بن عباس بـ "ترجمان القرآن".

التفسير بالمأثور هو التفسير الذي يعتمد على إعمال المفسر عقله في فهم القرآن والاستنباط منه.
