Homeostasis is the regulation of ( 1 ) and chemical factors in the internal environment to maintain optimal conditions for cells . The body uses ( 2 ) feedback mechanisms to correct deviations from normal ranges . For example , when blood glucose levels rise , the pancreas secretes ( 3 ) to lower it . The kidneys play a key role in homeostasis by removing waste through a process called ( 4 ) . Each kidney contains millions of tiny filtering units called ( 5 ) . Within each of these , ( 6 ) occurs in the glomerulus , where small molecules enter Bowman ? s capsule as glomerular filtrate . Useful substances like glucose and amino acids are then reabsorbed in the ( 7 ) convoluted tubule . The U - shaped ( 8 ) helps concentrate urine by reabsorbing water . Finally , urine flows through the ( 9 ) to the bladder for storage before being expelled via the ( 10 ) .

Health issues related to the urinary system include kidney stones and kidney failure . ( 11 ) is a major cause of kidney damage because it can harm the glomeruli over time . Kidney stones are hard masses often made of ( 12 ) or calcium salts and can block the ( 13 ) , reducing urine flow .
