The Paper by Ken Liu tells the story of Jack , a Chinese boy and his relationship with his immigrant mother . When Jack is young , his mother creates magical animals through origami , which can move and talk . These paper creatures become of her love and a way for her to share her culture and stories with Jack . As he grows older , Jack becomes embarrassed by his mother ? s accent , traditions , and differences , especially as he tries to fit in with his classmates . He begins to reject his mother , her language , and the paper animals that once meant so much to him .

As time passes , the emotional distance between Jack and his mother grows , and they struggle to communicate . After his mother , Jack discovers hidden written in Chinese inside the paper animals . When he finally them , he learns about his mother ? s painful past , her sacrifices , and her deep , unconditional love for him . This realization comes too late , leaving filled with regret for rejecting both his mother and his cultural heritage . The story ends with a powerful message about identity , love , and the lasting consequences of misunderstanding and rejection .
