A menudo se añade un cuarto nivel, el Apreciativo o Creativo, que se enfoca en la respuesta emocional y la generación de nuevas ideas.

Los niveles principales de comprensión lectora son el Literal, el Inferencial y el Crítico.

La progresión va de inferencial a literal hacia lo abstracto.

El Nivel Literal se centra en reducir el texto a cifras sin contexto.

El Nivel Literal consiste en identificar y recordar información explícita del texto.

El Nivel Crítico no permite cuestionar la validez del contenido.

El Nivel Apreciativo/Creativo es obligatorio siempre y es el primero.

El Nivel Inferencial implica ir más allá del texto, deduciendo y estableciendo relaciones entre ideas.

El cuarto nivel se llama Análisis de Personajes.
