The Magi are also called the or the Wise Men . All of these names refer to the group of people who visited Jesus after His birth . The Bible does not tell us their , but tradition says they were Caspar , Melchior , and Balthasar . They were scholars or from the , likely Persia or Babylon . They studied stars , science , and religion , which helped them notice the special that led them to Jesus .

The Magi are important because they were the first to recognize Jesus . Gentiles are people who are . Their visit shows that Jesus came for the whole and for everyone , not just one group of people . In art , the Wise Men are sometimes shown as different to remind us that Jesus is for all nations . The Bible does not say Magi there were , but people often say three because they brought gifts . Early artwork sometimes shows two , four , or even twelve Wise Men . They are often shown riding , which is not in the Bible but is a possible detail .

God used a special star as a sign to the Magi . It was not an ordinary star but a message from . The Magi followed it first to , where they asked about the newborn King . Herod felt and pretended that he wanted to Jesus too . He told the Magi to come back and tell him Jesus was .
