الأحداث المستقلة هي الأحداث التي لا يؤثر وقوع أحدها على احتمال وقوع الآخر.

إذا كان الحدثان أ، ب متنافيين، فإن ل(أ و ب) = ل(أ) + ل(ب).

الحدثان "الحصول على صورة" و"الحصول على كتابة" عند رمي قطعة نقد مرة واحدة هما حدثان متنافيان.

مجموع احتمالي حدث متنافٍ وحدث متمم له يساوي دائمًا 1.

عند رمي حجري نرد، فإن ظهور العدد 6 على الأول وعدد فردي على الثاني هما حدثان مستقلان.

في الأحداث المتنافية، تستخدم كلمة "و" لجمع الاحتمالات.

إذا كان الحدثان أ، ب متنافيين، فإنهما يقعان معًا في نفس الوقت.

عند سحب بطاقة من مجموعة بطاقات ثم إعادتها، ثم سحب بطاقة أخرى، يكون الحدثان مستقلين.
