Only digits 0-9 can be in a place value slot.

In subtraction, if the ones digit of the top number is smaller than the bottom, you regroup from the tens.

Regrouping in two-digit addition can happen only in the tens column.

If the sum of the ones place is 10 or more, you regroup, changing the group of 10 to a 10s stick and putting it in the tens place.
