Explanation

We are combining two groups of coins: 12 + 7. Addition is used whenever we join or combine groups to find the total.

Since some coins are taken away, we use subtraction. 25 − 8 = 17. Subtraction helps us find out how many coins are left after something is removed.

You are combining two groups of pearls: 18 + 24 = 42. Addition is used whenever we want to find the total of combined groups.

Spending coins means some are removed. So we subtract: 40 − 17 = 23. Subtraction is used to find what remains after taking some away.

First, we combine the coconuts we found: 32 + 15 = 47. Then we subtract the 9 taken by a monkey: 47 − 9 = 38. Always do the addition first because we combine before removing.
