Al cambiar una magnitud, las demás cambian en proporción para conservar a/b = c/d.

Las cuatro magnitudes deben ser del mismo tipo y no pueden ser distintas unidades.

Si se conocen tres magnitudes, nunca es posible hallar la cuarta.

Se aplica cuando hay dos razones directas enlazadas que comparten dos magnitudes.

La relación típica es a + b = c + d, que es la forma de la proporción en la compuesta.

En la regla de tres compuesta solo se utilizan tres magnitudes, no cuatro.

En la regla de tres compuesta con cuatro magnitudes se utiliza la proporción a/b = c/d.

Si se conocen a, b y c, se puede hallar d usando la proporción cruzada a·d = b·c.

La regla de tres compuesta no permite usar la multiplicación cruzada para resolver d.
