The of Covadonga was a very important event in Spanish history . After the Muslim of the Peninsula , a named Pelayo and a small group of Christians hid in the mountains of . They refused to pay taxes or change their religion .

In the year 722 , they fought against the Umayyad army in a called Covadonga . The Christians won because they knew the mountains very well . says that a miracle happened and the enemy's arrows turned back against them . For , this was the start of the Reconquista . However , chronicles described it as a small fight against " thirty wild " that was not important to their great .
