Nel castello di Roccanera un giovane scudiero di nome Aldric . era coraggioso e fedele al suo signore , il conte Edmondo , regnava su quelle terre da vent'anni . Un mattino il conte Aldric nella torre più alta . «Ho bisogno di te» , disse con voce grave . «Devi portare messaggio al castello di Valchiara . Consegnalo soltanto alla castellana , non ad altri . » Aldric la lettera sigillata e la sotto il mantello . Prima di partire , sua madre sistemò l'armatura e abbracciò forte . «Torna presto» , sussurrò . Il viaggio fu lungo . Aldric attraversò boschi sembravano incantati e guadò un fiume cui acque erano gelide . Quando finalmente a Valchiara , la castellana accolse nella grande sala . «Questo messaggio era atteso da tempo» , . «Il tuo signore ha scelto bene . » Aldric e , per la prima volta , sentì davvero un cavaliere .
