באמצעות הוספת אותיות או שינוי תנועות נוצרות מילים חדשות מאותו שורש.

למשפחות מילים יש שורש משותף המופיע בשלוש אותיות לפחות.

מילה יכולה להשתייך לשתי משפחות מילים בו-זמנית.

לכל שורש יש בדיוק שלוש אותיות בלבד.

דוגמה למשפחת מילים היא שורש כתב: כתב, כותב, מכתב, כתיבה.

אם שיניתי תנועה בתוך מילה, תמיד איווצרה מילה עם אותו שורש ובאותו משמעות.

אין קשר בין מילים כמו כתב וכותב למשפחת מילים אחת.
