After four years of war with Russia , images of destroyed buildings and huge numbers soldiers killed have become familiar . However , there is another serious problem that is not so easy to see : the soil of Ukraine may now be and unsafe for farming . Many wheat fields have been turned into battlefields and are now full of shell fragments , bomb craters , and burned military vehicles . of this , scientists from the Royal Agricultural University in England and Sumy National Agrarian University in Ukraine have started studying the ? term impact on the land . Their research shows that much of the soil contains dangerous heavy metals such as cadmium , cobalt , copper , zinc , and nickel . These can be toxic to humans and may remain in the soil for many years . Ukraine is called the " breadbasket of Europe " because before the war it was one of the world ? s largest exporters of grain and sunflower seeds . Losing farmland to pollution could harm Ukraine ? s economy and global food supplies . According to Ukrainian officials , more 800 square kilometres of soil have already been affected , and over one bomb craters have been found . Researchers collected more than 8 , 000 soil samples from battle areas . Interestingly , they discovered that bomb craters were not the most polluted . The highest levels of toxins were found near burned tanks , destroyed helicopters , and crashed drones . This finding gives some hope . Scientists say that farmers do not need abandon all damaged fields . Instead , they can identify specific " hotspots " that need to be avoided or cleaned . Experts are now working with Ukrainian authorities to farmers how to isolate contaminated areas and how to the soil safely . Researchers believe that , with the right methods , Ukrainian land will to produce food for its people ? and for the world .
