El turismo moderno no siempre . A principios del siglo XIX , cuando Thomas Cook en 1808 en Inglaterra , viajar por placer no era común y no existían las agencias de viajes .

Cook misionero y defensor del movimiento contra el alcohol . En 1841 organizó su primer viaje en tren para un grupo de personas que apoyaban la abstinencia , marcando el inicio del turismo organizado .

Ese primer viaje fue un éxito , ya que transporte a bajo costo y coordinó todo el recorrido . Esta fecha se considera el inicio de la industria turística moderna .

Con el tiempo , Cook a organizar viajes más grandes y largos . En 1846 realizó un viaje a Escocia para cientos de personas , ampliando su idea de viajes en grupo .

En 1855 su primer viaje internacional por Europa , visitando países como Francia y Alemania . Además , el concepto de " paquete vacacional " , que incluía transporte , comida y alojamiento .

También con la creación de guías de viaje , cupones ( vouchers ) para hoteles y los cheques de viajero , facilitando el acceso al dinero durante los viajes .

En 1872 organizó un viaje alrededor del mundo que más de 200 días , demostrando que los viajes largos eran posibles y seguros .

Su empresa creció rápidamente y , tras su muerte , fue dirigida por su hijo y luego por sus nietos , adaptándose a los cambios del turismo moderno .

Durante el siglo XX , especialmente después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial , el turismo enormemente , beneficiando a la empresa .

Aunque la compañía quebró en 2019 , el legado de Thomas Cook vivo , ya que sentó las bases del turismo actual .
