La historia describe que en el lugar de San José existía una aldea llamada La Villita.

El nombre original del lugar fue Villa Nueva de la Boca del Monte.

En 1737 se construyó una pequeña iglesia en honor a San José.

En 1755 el gobernador Tomás López del Corral ordenó que las familias construyeran sus casas cerca de la iglesia.
