The Food and Agriculture Organization ( FAO ) has warned that the in the Persian Gulf is causing serious problems for food security the world . The crisis has quickly disturbed global trade and is now affecting farmers , food prices , and many . FAO Chief Economist Máximo Torero said the situation is becoming very serious and that a solution is soon . He explained that time is very important because the longer the crisis continues , the worse the will be . One major problem is the Strait of Hormuz , an important sea route for world trade . Since the war , tanker traffic there has fallen by more than 90 percent . Usually , a of the world ? s oil , fertilizer , and natural gas passes through this area every day . Because of this , farmers are now facing a double problem . First , the of fuel is rising . Second , the price of fertilizer is also going up . These two things are very important for farming , so higher costs can make food more difficult . If the crisis ends soon , markets may return to normal in about three months . However , if the continues , it could reduce crop production in many countries and affect the next farming season . Poorer and more vulnerable countries may suffer the most . For example , Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are harvesting rice now , so delay can hurt their food supply . Some African countries also depend heavily on imported fertilizer . The is also affecting Gulf countries . In Iran , food prices are already rising quickly . Countries like Qatar and the United Arab import a lot of food , so they may face shortages . Many migrant workers in Gulf send money home to their families . If the conflict continues , these payments may decrease . FAO countries should find new shipping routes , support countries that food imports , and build stronger food systems for the .
