يقصد بالسيرة النبوية في الاصطلاح: دراسة حياة النبي ﷺ منذ ولادته حتى وفاته وما يتعلق بها من أخلاق وأحداث.

من خصائص السيرة النبوية "الوضوح"، حيث تفتقر حياة النبي ﷺ إلى تفاصيل دقيقة في مرحلة الشباب.

تتميز السيرة النبوية بـ "الواقعية" لأنها تعرض حياة النبي ﷺ كبشر تجري عليه الطبيعة البشرية من الفرح والحزن والمرض.

يعتبر القرآن الكريم هو المصدر الأول والأصيل لاستقاء السيرة النبوية.

كتب "المغازي والسير" هي المصدر الذي يهتم بذكر صفات النبي ﷺ الخِلقية (مظهره) والخُلقية (آدابه)

كتب "الدلائل" هي المصادر التي اهتمت بذكر المعجزات التي أجراها الله على يد نبيه

من أهداف دراسة السيرة النبوية فهم القرآن الكريم، حيث إن كثيراً من الآيات تفسرها الأحداث التي وقعت في حياة النبي ﷺ.

لا يشترط في دراسة السيرة النبوية تحقيق مبدأ "التأسي" أو الاقتداء، بل يكفي الاطلاع التاريخي فقط.
