Climate change is also making the situation worse . Rainfall is becoming less predictable , and droughts happen more often . Second , the population is growing , so more people need every day . This increases the demand for limited water resources . Another important reason is water management . Some pipes are old and broken , so a lot of water is lost before it reaches people . In some areas , water is wasted because of careless use . Pollution is also a problem . Rivers and become dirty because of waste from factories and households . This makes the water unsafe to use . The water shortage has many negative effects . People may not have water for drinking , cooking , and washing . Farmers cannot enough crops , so food prices can increase . Businesses may also suffer , which can lead job losses . In cities , people sometimes face water restrictions and must use water each day . To solve this problem , South Africa needs better and management . The government should repair pipes and improve water systems . People should also save water by using it . For example , they can take shorter and fix leaking taps . Protecting rivers and reducing pollution is also very important .
