The Mystery of the Old House
On Maple Street , there stood an old house that had been empty for years . The windows were broken , the paint was peeling , and the garden was full of weeds . Nobody knew why it had been abandoned , but the house had become the subject of many local ( 38 ) stories

Some people said it was haunted by ghosts , while others claimed that a treasure was hidden somewhere inside . The children in the neighborhood were both ( 39 ) and curious about the house . They would dare each other to get closer , but nobody had ever gone inside .

One summer afternoon , three friends - Emma , Lucas , and Sophie - decided to ( 40 ) the mystery . They had heard that the house was going to be demolished the following week , so this was their last ( 41 ) to discover its secrets .
" We should go tonight , " suggested Emma . " We can bring flashlights and ( 42 ) what's inside . "

Lucas was nervous but didn't want to appear ( 43 ) in front of his friends . Sophie , who loved mystery stories , was excited about the adventure .
