Lesein Mutunkei has found a way to combine his two passions : environmental conservation and football . When he was only 12 years old , he became concerned about the deforestation in his home country , Kenya . But instead of feeling , he took action , establishing Trees4Goals . Lesein promised that every time he scored a goal , he would plant 11 trees ? one for every member of his team . By the time Lesein was 18 , supporters of Trees4Goals had planted over 5000 trees .

Lesein tries to awareness of the problem of deforestation by giving talks and workshops . He has been 4 featured in the media around the world , and he is proud to receive messages from young people around the globe .

The Kenyan Ministry of the Environment and Forestry does not that deforestation is a problem . They provide Lesein with young trees and give him advice on where to plant them . FIFA , which the Fédération Internationale de Football Association , is equally supportive . A FIFA representative wrote : " This and other similar projects led by young people and climate defenders around the world are not only commendable2 , but also necessary . "

The problem of deforestation in Kenya may have been in the past , but today , thanks to the efforts of Lesein Mutunkei and other concerned citizens , forests now cover nine percent of Kenya's land , an increase from six percent in 2018 .
