They started the trade and supported wars . The kingdom became smaller , and many people were taken slaves . This made the government weak and caused many conflicts . Congo is very big and has gold , , and oil . However , this wealth has often caused problems instead of helping people . In the late 1800s , Henry Morton helped Europeans enter the area . Then King Leopold II ruled Congo as his personal . People had to collect rubber in very cruel conditions . Many people died from violence and punishment . Later , Belgium controlled Congo , but life did not get much better . When Congo became independent in 1960 , it was not . Leaders like Mobutu Sese Seko ruled for many , but people stayed poor . In recent years , has continued . Armed groups fight for land and minerals . Many people still , and life is still very hard .
