Organic Matter Content - Dichromate OxidationOnline version Order the processes for organic matter content of soils using dichromate oxidation, as specified in BS 1377-3 by Ben 1 Organic Matter content by Dichromate Oxidation - Overview Prepare all necessary reagents, and standardise the ferrous sulphate solution. Add the necessary chemicals and indicator to turn solution orange Add to flask with dichromate solution and sulfuric acid, it will heat up and oxidise organic matter Record amounts of solutions needed for colour change to calculate amount of organic matter oxidised. Add ferrous sulphate and dichromate back and forth to find point of colour change of green to blue. Prepare soil specimen, dried, sieved passing 2mm, pulverised and sieved through 425um sieve. Carry out a qualitative check for sulphides and eliminate any sulphides if necessary. Carry out a qualitative check for chlorides and eliminate any chlorides if necessary. Begin analysis for organic matter by selecting an appropriate sample weight between 0.2g and 5g 2 Standardisation of ferrous sulphate Add ferrous sulphate solution from a burette until colour changes to green Add a small amount of potassium dichromate (burette) to change the colour back to blue (purple ish) Prepare all necessary reagents Carefully add 200ml distilled water, then 10ml phosphoric acid and 1ml of indicator solution. Shake. Record total ferrous sulphate solution added to the nearest 0.05ml (X) Add ferrous sulphate by drop, continue swirling, until colour changes to green from a single drop Add 10ml potassium dichromate solution to a 500ml conical flask Carefully add 20ml sulphuric acid, swirl, and allow to cool back down 3 Qualitative check for sulphides Add approximately 5g soil sample to an appropriate flask If hydrogen sulphide is present, the paper will turn black and sulphide elimination is necessary Add 50ml of hydrochloric acid 25% solution to the flask Prepare your reagents and lead acetate soaked paper Bring solution to the boil and hold the dried lead acetate soaked paper over the vapours. 4 Organic matter analysis using dichromate oxidation Record the total volume of ferrous sulphate solution used to the nearest 0.05ml (Y) Calculate volume used to oxidise organic matter V = 10.5 [ 1 - (Y / X) ] Add a small amount of potassium dichromate solution to turn the colour back to blue Carefully add 200ml distilled water, followed by 10ml orthophosphoric acid & 1ml indicator solution Add ferrous sulphate from a burette in 0.5ml increments until the colour changes fully to green Thoroughly shake solution, and add further 1ml indicator solution if absorbed by soil Add 10ml potassium dichromate from a burette Add ferrous sulphate by drop, continue swirling, until colour changes to green from a single drop Carefully add 20ml sulphuric acid, then cool for 30 minutes to allow oxidation of organic matter Select an appropriate weight of soil (0.2 - 5.0 g) and transfer to a 500ml conical flask
