War between United States and Mexico due to conflict over annexation of Texas and its borders. The end of the war gained the United States several new states. This expansion of the gained them new resources, land, and areas to abuse labor.

American abolitionist and leader in the movement for African American civil rights. Rose to fame after publishing his book as his life as a slave. Throughout his life, he continued to publish antislavery writings and calling out government policies.

The idea that the government’s power come from the people it governs. This allowed residents of territories to determine whether they wanted slavery or not within in their jurisdiction.

Issued by Lincoln in 1862 to take effect in '63, stated that all slaves in states that had seceded the Union were to be freed upon them rejoining the Union. This showed that Lincoln had confidence in winning the war.

The democrats were split during this election, allowing republican Lincoln to win with the electoral college. Even thoush he had not run on the platform of ending slavery his win still led to the first seven states to break away from the Union.

The 5 upper Southern states that remained a part of the Union were suspended of their rights as people as a strategy to keep the states from seceding. Approximately 13,000 people were arrested and many were held without trials.

Law that allowed people to decide the fate of slavery based on whatever was voted the most. Result of this was violent fights between the two groups. This all showed the popularity just led the fighting more instead of trying to make a compromise

Supreme court decision that said enslaved people were not citizens and the Congress had no right to ban slavery in states. This allowed slavery to spread and the north thought the justice system was controlled by people who wanted slavery.

Political party formed to go against the expansion of slavery. The party gained support in the north and was very important to the nation. Helped to get Abraham Lincoln in office, but they also made a larger divide.

At the dedication of the soldiers, President Abraham Lincoln called the Union to continue to fight for freedom, remember the basis of the Constitution (all men are created equal) and honor the fallen soldiers.

Amendment that officially abolished slavery except as a punishment for a convicted crime.

Lincoln proposed the confederacy to rejoin the Union if 10% of their voters would swear allegiance to the Union and accept emancipation. Both parties not pleased, republicans wanted stricter conditions, and democrats didn’t want to join the Union.
