Una central eòlica transforma del en electricitat mitjançant turbines orientades cap al vent . Cada giren amb velocitats diferents segons el perfil del vent , cosa que regula la producció d'electricitat . Aquests complexos , coneguts com a , poden ocupar grans extensions de terreny i s'escarpen en zones amb poc impacte ambiental si es planifiquen bé . L'energia resultant ajuda a reduir les emissions de gasos amb efecte hivernacle , però també planteja reptes com el soroll i l'impacte sobre la fauna .
