Computers face problems in two broad areas : hardware related problems and software related problems . Hardware issues can involve faulty components , overheating , or failing connections between devices . When diagnosing hardware , users often check ports and interfaces such as the for legacy keyboards , the used by older monitors , the for peripherals , and the for network connectivity . Software problems are divided into application software problems and operating system problems , where drivers and updates can fix many issues yet sometimes more extensive OS troubleshooting is required .
