Possessives Adjetives

Possesive Adjetives

Possessive adjectives show:

1- that something belongs to somebody.

This is my bag

2- the relationship between two or more people.

She is our mother.

While we use them when we refer to people, it is more in the sense of relationship than ownership.

We put possessive adjectives before nouns.

 He is my father.

We do not include an S to the adjective when the noun is plural like in many other languages.

  1. Our cars are expensive. (Correct)
  2. Ours cars are expensive. (Incorrect)

Its vs. It's

Be careful not to confuse its and it's.

  1. Its = The possessive adjective for It.
  2. It's = a contraction of it is.

Possessive Pronouns

  • Possessive Pronouns

Show that something belongs to someone. They do not take a noun after them.

Compare:

  1. This is my  bicycle. (possessive adjective)
  2. It is mine. (possessive pronoun)

*There is no possessive pronoun 'it'.
