Miguel López de Legazpi , a administrator , was given political and military command with the goal of colonizing the Islands ( named in honor of King Philip II ) . Traveling him was the Augustinian Andrés de Urdaneta , one of the finest and navigators of his time .

In 1565 , Legazpi successfully arrived in the Philippine , where he established the first permanent Spanish ( starting with Cebu and later Manila ) by using a mix of , blood compacts with local leaders , and military force .

However , the greatest scientific was accomplished by Urdaneta that same year when he discovered the tornaviaje ( the return to America ) . He sailed north to catch the Kuroshio Current , eventually California and heading down to Acapulco . This inaugurated the Manila Galleon trade route , connecting Asia , America , and Europe for the very first time in history .
