They help you give the sentences a time frame, the actions started in an specific time in the past.

Although the video says that we use "for" with hours, days, and years, it should be used for an amount of them, not an specific time/date. "I have been studying for 6 years" "I have been working for 3 hours" "I have been training for 7 days".
