Grammar 1 VERBS part 1

by Mayka Friedrich
1

The order of auxiliaries is fixed: modals, then perfect, then progressive, then passive, then lexical verb.

2

Have + past participle forms the perfect aspect.

3

Aspectual auxiliaries include perfective HAVE (+past participle) and progressive BE (+ present participle)

4

A finite verb is marked for tense (present or past).

5

The present participle is never used with be to form the progressive tense.

6

Nonfinite verbs include to-infinitive, bare infinitive, present participle, and past participle.

7

Modal auxiliaries must be followed by the bare infinitive.

8

Be + present participle forms the progressive aspect.

9

Each auxiliary verb determines the form of the verb that follows.

10

The perfect-progressive aspect is never used to describe ongoing actions.

11

Dummy DO is used to negate or form questions when no other auxiliaries are present.

12

Auxiliaries can occur independently as main verbs.

13

The passive is formed with be + past participle.

14

There are only three aspects in English.
