After many months of delays , Melbourne is starting a new tap - and - go payment system on its train . From this month , full - fare passengers will be able to use a credit card , mobile , or smartwatch instead of a myki card when travelling on trains . The new technology will be introduced in two . The first stage begins on Sunday and covers several train lines , including Sunbury , Pakenham , Cranbourne , Frankston , Werribee , Geelong , Bendigo , and services . One week later , the system will be expanded to more lines , including Mernda , Hurstbridge , Lilydale , Belgrave , Alamein , and Glen Waverley . The new payment option will be at all myki - enabled train stations across the Metro train network and some regional V / Line stations . However , concession passengers , tram users , and bus will need to wait longer before they can use the technology .
