A very strong earthquake measuring 7 . 8 hit in the south of the Philippines on Monday morning at 7 : 37am . The quake shook , schools , restaurants , and other buildings . Some buildings fell down , and many people were hurt by falling parts of walls , roofs , and glass . Early said that 15 people died and 129 were injured , but officials were still checking the numbers . The earthquake happened near General Santos City . Experts said the center of the quake was 13 kilometres south - of the city . One agency said it was 10 kilometres deep , while another gave a different depth . This can happen after a earthquake . The shaking also caused a tsunami . Waves reached nearby coasts , and some places saw water as high as 1 metre . Because of this danger , people near the sea were told to move to higher ground or go farther inland from the coast . Officials in Indonesia , Malaysia , and also gave warnings because tsunami waves might reach their shores . The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later said the biggest had mostly passed after about five hours , but people still needed to stay careful because sea levels could keep . Small tsunami waves were also possible in other Pacific areas . After the main quake , more earthquakes followed , including one as strong as 6 . 1 . President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said the was ready to help and that rescue teams were on standby . Police officers and rescue workers said they were busy trapped people and checking damaged places . People in parts of Indonesia also felt the shaking , and small tsunami waves were there . Schools and fast - food buildings were among the places badly damaged .
