Adaptive Information Reprocessing model. As the cornerstone of EMDR therapy, the model guides clinical practice.

Bilateral stimulation is any stimulation—visual, auditory, or kinesthetic—that addresses both the left and right sides of the brain in sequence.

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy; primary focus is on reducing anxiety.

Subjective Units of Disturbance measures the level of distress associated with an incident/event.

Validity of Cognition: Measurement of how true the selected positive cognition feels when paired with the target incident/event.

The negative self-belief associated with the unprocessed and dysfunctional negatively stored incident/event.

The positive belief which reflects the client’s desired direction of change.

The components of memory: Trigger (or target), Image (or other sensory aspect of the memory), Cognition, Emotion, and Sensation.
