During the 16th , the Moriscos were Muslims living in Spain who had been forced to to Christianity . However , many of them secretly kept their Islamic , language , and traditions .

In 1567 , King Philip II passed strict banning their language , traditional clothes , and . Consequently , in 1568 , they started a major known as the War of the Alpujarras in the of Granada . The rebellion was fierce , but the royal army finally them in 1571 . To prevent future rebellions , Philip II decided to the Granada Moriscos across other of Spain .

However , tensions did not disappear . Many Christians still them , and the monarchy feared the Moriscos might help Ottoman attack Spain . Finally , in 1609 , King Philip III made a drastic decision : he ordered the definitive of all Moriscos from Spain . Around 300 , 000 people had to leave the forever , causing a major loss for Spain's economy , especially in .
