A group of countries , led by Spain , fought against the Ottoman for control of the Sea . During the battle , Cervantes was on a called La Marquesa . Even though he was with a fever , he refused to stay in bed and insisted on fighting . He was three times : in the chest and in his left hand . This injury completely paralyzed his hand , earning him the famous " El Manco de Lepanto " ( The One - Handed Man of Lepanto ) . Cervantes was always very of his military service , calling Lepanto the most glorious event that past or future would ever see .
