FROGGY JUMPS: "STREET" — Phoneme Pond

About this activity

A little frog wants to cross the pond to reach the shore. To get there, he must jump from one floating lily pad to the next. Each lily pad has a sound. But be careful — some pads are trap sounds that don’t belong in the English word!

Your mission: Guide the frog across the pond by choosing the correct phoneme for each step of the word. If you pick the right sound, the frog jumps safely to the next pad. If you choose a wrong sound — especially an extra vowel that Persian speakers sometimes slip in — the lily pad sinks, and the frog falls into the water and drowns.

The frog can only reach his destination if you build the whole word perfectly, sound by sound, without any extra vowels.

For example, in the word spring, you must guide the frog through the sounds /s/ → /p/ → /r/ → /ɪ/ → /ŋ/. If you try to put a vowel like /e/ before the /s/, or an /ə/ between the consonants /p/ and /r/, the frog never makes it.
