El modelo atómico ha evolucionado desde las ideas de , que afirmó que la materia está formada por partículas indivisibles , hasta los experimentos de que descubrieron la presencia de cargas eléctricas en el átomo . Más tarde , demostró que el átomo tiene un núcleo cargado positivamente , y propuso órbitas para electrones en niveles bien definidos . Con el desarrollo de la mecánica cuántica , y otros científicos mostraron que la distribución de electrones se describe en nubes probabilísticas .
